The Fullness of Christ

IN MEMORIAM.

FATHER.

1875.

A cloud, heavenward gilded with glory
Hangs darkly above our sweet home;
A loneliness, tender but painful,
O'ershadows each dear, well-loved room.

Death's angel has wrought his sad mission,
And broken our circle of love
The Master has taken his servant
To rest in the mansions above.

We know that his pure, ransomed spirit
Was longing to reach its bright home,
We would not recall him from glory
Again 'mid earth's trials to roam.

We know, too, that loved ones were waiting
To give him a welcome, most sweet-
'Twas one of his first joys in heaven
His own long-lost children to greet.

And bright, sainted ones without number,
The friends to his mem'ry so dear;
Yes, those who were there to receive him
Were more than the weeping ones here.

But O, we so miss our dear father,
Our hearts are so sad and so sore;
We long to be with him, in heaven,
When all our life-struggles are o'er.

At morn and at noon, as we gather
Around the old altar of prayer,
A deep, sacred yearning steals o'er us,
For, O, there's a vacancy there!

We miss the dear voice that once led us-
The verses he loved to repeat-
The calm, earnest reading of Scripture,
So tender, so loving, so sweet.

And as we bow down in our weakness,
Our Savior to praise and adore,
How fond and how precious the mem'ries,
Of him who has passed on before.

And O, how we urge the petition,
That God, in his infinite love,
Will take us, at last, all together,
To dwell in the refuge above.

MOTHER.

1878.

I am thinking of dear mother,
Of her love so warm and true;
Never falt'ring, never changing,
All life's weary journey through.

She was always bright and hopeful,
Bravely breasting every storm,
Keeping us within the shelter
Of her heart, so large and warm.

She has gone, and we are mourning
With a yearning, tender grief,
Sweetened with the fondest mem'ries,
And the Christian's firm belief.

I am thinking of the glory,
And the joy she has to-day;
All the working, all the sorrow,
All life's burdens passed away.

She is with her dear Redeemer,
He who led her safely through—
Safely through earth's countless dangers—
Blessed thought! He leads us, too!

In the happy, bright hereafter,
In the land where all is pure,
We shall meet and dwell forever;
Precious promise, sweet and sure.

She has gone, our dear, dear mother,
Gone from us to those in heaven—
Six have left our fond home circle,
Now on earth we count but seven.

She has found those long-lost loved ones,
And together now they wait—
Father, mother, sisters, brothers,
Grouping there so fast of late.

Yes, methinks they all are waiting
On the glorious shores of light!

Waiting, watching, near heaven's harbor,
Trusting we are steering right!

Dear ones, we are coming swiftly,
Time is hurrying us along;
Jesus is our faithful captain,
He will land us 'mid your throng.
