this fund according to certain regulations, a committee was appointed, of which the Rev. Dr. Thomas Price, pastor of Calvaria Baptist Church, was appointed Chairman, and the writer, succeeding the Rev. D. M. Jenkins, Secretary. The duties were for years arduous. In this connexion Dr. Price and the writer were brought into close and friendly contact. With pleasure does the latter bear witness to the generosity, sympathy, and tenderheartedness, manifested by the former in alleviating the sorrows and distress of the unfortunate sufferers. Notwithstanding his manifold engagements, Dr. Price was punctually at his post of duty, unless unavoidably from home. The claims of applicants necessitated great caution and patient inquiry to avoid imposition, but neither he nor his associates ever wearied in listening to the sorrowful appeals of the widow and orphan. His sympathies were deep and broad. He seemed to yearn for opportunities for comforting the distressed. Words of consolation, of hope, and of encouragement he had for all, and often succeeded in calming the troubled spirit. While cautious in action, he preferred to err, if error there was, on the side of leniency. Often has it been the privilege of the writer to hear the outpourings of grateful hearts for the genial, tender compassion exhibited in voice and manner in cases of special affliction. Yet, he did not hesitate to rebuke sternly the few who attempted to impose upon or to deceive himself and his associates. Happily, such incidents were few. (He held strongly the opinion that the fund had been collected for a special purpose and for particular persons, and ought to be used for that purpose and those persons, and no other. Greatly was he grieved when the fund was partly diverted into other channels). The writer may add that he has evidence of Dr. Price's liberality of soul towards his neighbours and others with whom he came in contact. This however is outside the purpose with which he began this notice."
