I find that among the musicians of the younger generation Beethoven does not hold the same place as he did to those of us who were young men in the "nineties." Perhaps this is natural. The "sublimity" which a past generation admired in the middle period of Beethoven seems to date it at once as early nineteenth century—a period with which the younger generation is out of sympathy. But doubtless time will bring its revenges; and even now those who are voluble in their criticism of the early and middle Beethoven are dumb before such things as the Ninth Symphony, the Mass in D, and the C Sharp Minor Quartet. These works belong to no period; they seem not to be the product of any individual intelligence, but to be the manifestations of something which has existed from the beginning of time, and whose materialization in the early nineteenth century is purely accidental.
