News! News!! NEWS!!! Ye fowls of the air,— ye creatures that growl, groan, and puff in the mighty deep; Ye beasts of the forest and all things that crawl on the face of the earth; ay, sun, moon, and stars, earth, air, fire, water, and all creation: News! News!! NEWS!!!— Thus the herald screams as he rushes through the universe bearing the glad tidings of some little man who resides at a remote corner of our world, having this day completed the score of his last work, ' Emmanuel' So intense is the news that all things are dumb with astonishment and fright, even paralyzed as the herald's tones and vibrations roll onward and ever onward through space. So now for a while, my poor and feeble brain, nerve and hands may pause awhile and wonder what such a pause means, being so unusual. This silence may contain a symphony of such delicate and delicious strains played by an orchestra of angels, so gentle is their touch, and so soothing the music they produce as their angelic fingers wander to and fro upon their golden instruments; such instruments and effects that even Wagner never heard in his sweetest dreams. I feel that silence may produce the very essence of music. These are some of the thoughts that the author experiences on the completion of his work.
