At this time there was much sickness in the Edwards' family, accompanied, as it always is, with heavy expenses. The whole family except Risiart Ddu and his sister Emily, had emigrated to Wisconsin. Emily had been an invalid for several years, and was entirely dependent on her father. And as she was often moving from place to place for the sake of her health, her expenses must have been considerable. As she and Risiart Ddu were particularly fond of each other, and always corresponding, she caused him much care and anxiety. And should her quarterly allowance in any way be delayed, he always furnished her with money out of his own limited means until her remittance should come. But now R. Ddu's health was nearing the danger point, which made him and Emily dearer to each other than ever. Their sympathy for each other, always great, had grown intense daring the years the health of both had become shattered. Their souls were knit together as the souls of Jonathan and David. This was very natural when both were in a weak state of health, and over four thousand miles from the rest of the family.

Risiart Ddu was very reluctant to give up the idea of going to Glasgow, but under the circumstances he had to do so. And after completing his studies at Bala he received and accepted a call from the Congregational Church at Mynydd Islwyn, Monmouthshire.
