GRAMMAR AND STYLE.

Ihave mentioned above his felicitous usc of similes and scriptural quotations. In thc Notes will be found much on the orthography and syntax of the text.

He shewed a great partiality for certain verbal forms that are now either dialectal or of but rare occurrence in Hterary Welsh. The ^rd sg. aorist in -s as ^ gafas ' (p. 42, 1. 16), ' gofodes ' (P 69, 1. 30), ^rithwys ' (p. 161, 1. Ii); the stiU more frequent ^rd plu. aorist in -ont as ^ aethont/ ' wnaethont,' ' wclfont,' ^ tiriafont/ ahnost on every page ; and again such forms as ' dy wad/ ^rd sg. aorist from pres. ' dy wedaf.'

His inconsistent orthography is quite inexcus- able, for the same word will often be spelt in two difFerent ways on the same page, and occasionally in consecutive sentences : the * chwithau ' of p. 55, 1. 65 becomes 'chwitheu' five Hnes below; the more usual ' byddai ' is not unfrequently ^ byddei/ as on pp. 62, 63 ; the ^ llofcwyd ' of p. 50, 1. 6, is ' lofgwyd ' only three lines below ; ' ieuangc ' is also ' ievangc ' and ^ iefangc ' in the textj and the treatment of the mutation of ^ jn ' with a noun beginning in c- is very uncertain ; thus we have 'YngHymru' (p. 112), 'Yng Hymru' (p. 51, 1. 27), and ' Yng Nghymru' (p. 157, 1. 7), from 'yn' and ' Cymru.' His inconsistency at times malces it diíficult or impossible to say whether a particular form is intentional or a printer's error, as 'Bruthwyr' and ^Brithwyr' (v. pp. 73, &c.)5 and 'cug' for 'cig' (p. 159, 1. 18).

The writer has a rather fine ear for rhythm. Certain words lilce the Definite Article, the Posses- sive Adjective, and Personal Pronouns have
