mountains leading towards the great Snowdon range. These mountains are occasionally magnificently wooded; some green almost to the summit, while the broken ridges of the others are of the bare slate rock. Nothing can exceed the grandeur of these hills looking towards Beddgelert and across the Glaslyn in the opposite County of Merionethshire. A railway is projected from Carnarvon to Portmadoc, which if carried out cannot fail to add materially to the improvement of the district. Portmadoc is in a very dirty and undrained state, and as was stated in the evidence is very badly supplied with water. The state of paving is very bad. At the back of London Road some drains have been recently constructed under the Nuisance Removal Act, which have led to a marked improvement in the condition of the yards to the houses. In those cases where the yards and cesspools have not been drained it is a common thing to find offensive soaking into the houses. Scarlatina was very prevalant in the worst parts. Overcrowding seems very common. . .. The situation of the privies are almost unexceptionally bad. In many instances they form part of the houses. **** The little village of Borth consists only of a few houses; it is close to Portmadoc. At the present time shipbuilding is going on there. . . . . The road is in a wretched condition from there, there being no proper means of carrying off the surface There is a strong stream running down it, rendering it almost unpassable. **** Tremadoc although of a more suburban character than Portmadoc, is greatly in want of improvement. The state of the yards is much the same as those I have already discribed in Portmadoc.
